Bow Arts’ mission is to support community renewal in East London by delivering Arts and Creative Services through a financially sustainable model.
We are the artist studio provider of choice for emerging artists. We recognise both the needs and economies of recent graduates and artists at the early stages of their careers and refelct this in the provision of our artist studios and LiveWork accommodation. We also offer opportunities to artists through our employment of artist educators and opportunities to exhibit, showcase their work and engage with other professionals.
We have a solid 15 year track record of providing affordable workspace for a wide range of visual artists and creative practitioners.
Both artists and communities are at the heart of our business, and by joining Bow Arts artists benefit from, and directly contribute to, one of the most exciting artists’ communities in London. We currently manage over 100,000 sq ft of artist studios and LiveWork accommodation for approximately 400 artists, in over 200 studios in four sites in East and South East London. We also manage over 70 LiveWork flats across 8 sites in east London, in the heart of what is becoming London’s Artist Quarter.
Bow Arts SE1 Studios at the Bermondsey Project
The building, now known as The Bermondsey Project, is just minutes from Bermondsey Square and Bermondsey Street. The area is rapidly becoming a very vibrant artistic hub. Our studios are on the same site as Southwark Studios and the Tannery Studios / The Drawing Room with the White Cube’s new gallery space in Bermodsey Street is a 5 minute walk away. Bermondsey and London Bridge stations are just 10 minutes walk.
Opened in summer 2010 and expanded at the end of 2011, the spaces are particularly suited to emerging artists and recent graduates, and have proved enormously popular, now providing extremely affordable studio space for 120 artists in 90 individual spaces.
Built with affordability in mind and designed to facilitate and encourage peer to peer networking, the studios are a stimulating creative environment.
This helps emerging artists make that difficult transition from college into a sustained professional practice. SE1 Studios have been built around a semi open plan layout. This maximizes the size and light of the spaces, and helps to create a communal atmosphere, rather than the ‘closed corridor’ effect that is sometimes encountered in traditional, larger studio set ups, which often leaves artists wondering “where is everyone?”.
By building the spaces this way Bow Arts has also been able to keep costs to a minimum, allowing us to pass these savings directly on to artists.
There are 45 studios on each floor, ranging in size from mostly small to medium (80-200 square feet), and starting in price from £20 per week, inclusive of all costs including electricity charges.
